What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is a fat reduction injectable that is primarily used to treat moderate to severe submental fat, also known as a double chin.

Kybella® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid – a naturally occurring compound in the gut that breaks down and absorbs fat cells. Kybella® works by permanently destroying the fat cells, thus causing a noticeable fat reduction.

Kybella® is FDA-approved for treating a double chin. However, it is also used off-label for treating fat in other areas of the body, including upper arms, elbows, knees, and even bra fat.

Am I A Good Candidate For Kybella®?

Kybella® is best suited for people who are at least 18 years or older and are looking for an effective yet non-surgical treatment for stubborn fat under their chins.

How To Prepare For The Treatment

The procedure is relatively simple and doesn’t require extensive preparation.

Your injector will ask you about your medical history, particularly any medications that you’re currently on, and will physically examine the area of concern to determine the right treatment plan for you.

It’s best if you wash your face properly with a mild cleanser before the treatment to reduce the risk of infection at the injection sites.

Additionally, it is best to avoid taking any blood thinner medications (only with your attending physician’s approval, of course) such as NSAID’s and aspirin a few days before the treatment to reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising during the treatment.

What Happens During The Treatment?

Your injector will analyze and mark the injection sites in a grid-like pattern followed by sterilization and numbing of the area to reduce any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

The next step is to administer a series of Kybella® injections. The number of injections required to achieve the desired result depends upon the amount of fat in the target area.

The procedure is fairly quick and can be completed in under 30 minutes.

What Happens After The Treatment?

Kybella® requires minimal to no downtime, and you should be able to get back to your daily routine as soon as you leave the office.

The procedure is safe and the risk of side effects is next to none. Some people might experience mild swelling and redness, which usually resolves on its own in a day or two.

Typically, two treatments may be required (spaced at least a month apart) to achieve noticeable reductions in stubborn fat deposits. However, a maximum of six treatments may be required in severe cases.

Yes, Kybella® injections offer a long-term solution for stubborn submental fat as long as you maintain a stable weight. Be mindful that gaining excess weight can cause the remaining fat pad to expand, thus diminishing your results.
