Read on to know more about them.
What Are Some Of The Commonly Used Types Of Neurotoxins?
As of 2022, there have been four injectable neurotoxins available on the market:
- Botox®
- Dysport®
- Xeomin®
- The newest kid on the block Jeuveau® (aka #newtox)
Botox® is the first FDA-approved neurotoxin, followed by Dysport® and Jeuveau®. They’re all derived from the same toxin known as botulinum toxin type A and vary in terms of their formulations and additives.
Botox® can treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Similarly, Dysport® and Jeuveau® are used to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.
How Do Neurotoxins Work?
Neurotoxins inhibit the nerve activity between your brain and the muscles in the treated area. They soften the look of dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the treated muscles and preventing them from contracting.
What Are Some Of The Benefits Of Neurotoxins?
Neurotoxin injections have been the treatment of choice for dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and frown lines, primarily because:
The procedure is quick, with the injection itself taking only a few minutes to administer.
The whole procedure is virtually painless and requires little to no downtime at all.
The results are temporary and reversible, so if you don’t like them, rest assured they will subside gradually.
They’re less expensive and less time-consuming than surgery.
The side effects are almost non-existent, as compared to surgeries and other more invasive procedures.
How Does It Work?
Neurotoxins such as Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® are referred to as ‘lunchtime’ treatments. The procedure of injecting the neurotoxin is simple yet relies heavily on the proper technique (i.e. the right dosage should be injected at the right points). Therefore, only a well-trained and extensively experienced provider can help you achieve optimal results safely.
It usually takes a few days for the results to kick in after the injection.
What Should I Do After The Procedure?
Neurotoxin treatments do not require any extensive aftercare routine. However, it is not uncommon to experience mild bruising or swelling at the site of injections, but these usually subside within a day or two.
To reduce the risk of side effects, it’s advised to avoid rubbing the treated area, lying down, as well as heavy workouts for the first 24 hours.
Are The Results Permanent?
No, the results are not permanent, but they can last up to 3 to 4 months. You might need 2 to 3 treatment sessions per year, depending on the severity of your wrinkles and your body’s ability to metabolize the toxin.
Neurotoxins such as Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® can soften the look of dynamic facial wrinkles and restore your youthful-looking features.
