With aging comes fine lines and wrinkles, loss of tissue volume, more pronounced acne scars, and under-eye hollows. While having a good skincare routine and making healthy lifestyle choices can help delay such signs of aging, they cannot treat the ones that have already appeared.
Luckily, dermal fillers such as the Restylane® line can help restore age-related volume loss, reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, and even enhance facial contours. The unique formulation of Restylane® fillers also provides results that are more subtle and natural.

What Is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a line of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers manufactured by Galderma. Hyaluronic acid works by attracting and binding water under the skin, thus adding volume and fullness to the skin.
Restylane® fillers are used to:
- Restore age-related volume loss;
- Soften the look of static wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines;
- Lift up sagging cheeks;
- Make your lips appear fuller and plumper;
- Improve the appearance of acne and other scars;
- Fill in under-eye hollows.
Different Types Of Restylane® products
Different Restylane® products are designed and formulated to address different aesthetic concerns, for example:
It is best suited to soften the look of facial wrinkles, add volume to your lips, and fill in under-eye hollows.
Restylane® Refyne And Defyne
Their unique formulation makes them flexible and best suited for high-movement areas, such as around the nose and mouth. They can also treat moderate to severe nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
However, Defyne can also be used for filling other deep wrinkles and folds.
It can add subtle volume to your lips and soften the look of fine lines around your mouth.
It can add volume to cheeks and hands.
It is the treatment of choice for lip augmentation, as well as to treat smoker’s lines.
It can be used for cheek augmentation and mid-face contouring.
How To Prepare For Your Filler Appointment
The treatment is minimally invasive and requires little to no preparation. It is advisable to:
- Avoid blood thinners (only with your attending physician’s approval) such as aspirin, Vitamin E, and NSAIDs a few days before the treatment. These can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising at the injection sites.
- Avoid excessive alcohol intake and smoking as they can delay the healing process.
What To Expect During The Procedure
The procedure itself is quick and painless and can be performed within 30 to 45 minutes.
Restylane® is injected using very fine needles parallel to the length of the wrinkles, fold, or lip to be treated. The depth of the needle depends upon the target area. For example, when treating nasolabial folds, Restylane® is injected into the deeper layers of your skin. Conversely, for lip augmentation, it should be injected into the superficial layers of the skin on the lips.
Once the filler has been completely injected, we gently massage the treated area to ensure that it spreads evenly, thus avoiding any lumps from forming.
After the procedure, you should be able to see an immediate improvement. However, it may take up to two weeks for the full results to appear, provided that you follow certain aftercare practices, such as avoiding the following for a few days after the procedure:
- Exposure to direct sunlight
- Touching or rubbing the treated area
- Heavy or strenuous exercises
Are There Any Side Effects?
Restylane® products have little to no risk of side effects. Some people may experience some mild swelling and redness that usually resolves on its own within a day or two.
With over 50 million patients treated with Restylane® so far, the safety and effectiveness of Restylane® products are well-established. However, only a well-trained injector can help you achieve your desired look that doesn’t look frozen or overdone.
So, if you’re looking for a non-surgical and effective treatment to address the signs of aging (volume loss, wrinkles, and uneven facial contours), Restylane dermal fillers might be just what you need.
